Hi. When you come to a stop it drags the engine down and it dies, like a manual transmission would feel if you forgot to push in the clutch?
no the transmission goes to first gear like normal ... the engine is idling at 700 RPMs then shifts to second gear. I know its shifting because sometimes it happens while the car is still moving and I can catch it before it stalls and give it a little more gas and the engine will keep running in second gear. if I shift to neutral before I stop or force the transmission into 1st gear the truck will not shift into second gear and stall. this has been going on consistantly for three years. In the last year I've tried to solve this problem.
I hope all this helps.
Thanks
Do if you are coming to a stop like normal and don't touch the shifter, the engine will drag down and try to die, while the truck kind of tries to keep pulling, right?
Ok what make you favor the soleniod vs the computer sensors? I have two reasons for asking this question. Everyone I have blogged in teh last year has steered me towards the sensors because everything appeared to be operating normally. My last attempt to fix this was the transmission Gov pressure sensor in the transmission. All the bloggs stated the pressure switch were known for acting like the transmission was slipping or acting funny. ( My second problem ( not stated here in this thread of discussion ) is when costing through a speed bump then speeding up, the engine can't decide which gear to go into (first or second) unless you floor it and force the transmission into first gear)
the soleniod in the valve body... is this something I can check my self? or does the transmission need to come off?
I definately do not have a leak in the transmisson.
Control modules are often replaced for no reason at all, other than noone knows how they work. In your case you have about a 99.9% chance at ruling it out.
There are two sensors on your trans. The output speed sensor on the back of the overdrive unit is used for governor pressure calculations. If it was bad there would be codes set, and it would go into a third gear limp in and stay there.
There is the governor pressure transducer on the valve body. This is used for the 1-2 and the 2-3 upshifts and downshifts. It has no affect on the converter clutch at all. It may contribute to your other shift problem.
Splitting the valve body or replacing the solenoid pack can be kind of tricky. You'll need an accurate in lb torque wrench to put it back in. If you do take it apart make sure to seat it against the trans before torquing the bolts, if you use the bolts to draw it up you'll ruin it.
If the valve body and solenoid are ok then the trans will have to come out. the pump will need to be pulled and the input shaft seals checked or replaced. These seals seal the apply and release sides of the clutch passages from each other. If these seals leak the converter will apply when its not supposed to. You won't see any leaks on the ground, this is all internal and can very well be the problem. If they are ok, valve body and solenoid ok, replace the converter.
