I have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 quad cab with the 5.2 318 this is the first time i ever had to add oil and a quart and i noticed that there was oil on the transmission bell and wondering if there is a common problem like rear main or oil pan or etc

yes normally if you have oil coming out of the bell housing the rear main is leaking it's not uncommon for them to leak

how bout the oil sending unit

only if you have oil on top of the bell housing or running down from the rear of the intake usually if they are leaking the oil pressure gauge acts weird too

is there a way for me to identify to make sure its the rear main seal

yes there is an inspection cover on the front of the bell housing that you can unbolt and pull back a little to see if there is oil in the bell housing if there is it's a rear main leak

then i would get some oil dye and add it to the engine oil to try to find the source of the leak that will be the easiest way to find it it could be the back of the intake leaking an oil pan gasket or oil filter adaptor gasket
