Question

We found our 8 y/o 170# St. Bernard dead on the patio surrounded by so much blood we thought he'd been shot. He was laying as if he were sleeping so nothing looked out of the ordinary until we saw all the blood. The blood pooled at his head/neck area and flowed the length of his body onto the surrounding rocks. We could find no wounds and the blood seemed to come from his mouth/ear area. We use no poisons and have no toxic plants in the yard. He was on Rimadyl once a day for pain and other than being old, he was relatively healthy. Once in a while he would stumble which we attributed to his old age and arthritis. What could have caused all this blood?

I am so sorry to hear about your dog. It must have been horrible to find him this way.

If this just happened today, the best way to have the most accurate answer would be to have an autopsy done on your dog (called a necropsy in animals). I can let you know how to arrange to have this done.

From your description it sounds like the blood came from his mouth or neck, but you did not see any signs of trauma and he does not have any known ingestion of any toxins.

My greatest suspicion would be that he had an internal bleed in his stomach and the blood you saw was vomited up. The bleeding could have been caused by a ruptured vessel or even a bleeding disorder (where he developed a condition that prohibited him from clotting his blood normally). Dogs can also rapidly develop a condition called hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE) that can be quite deadly. However, often you will see blood in the stools as well.

The second option is that the blood was coughed up from his lungs. This too may this result of a ruptured vessel or even from a ruptured mass (cancer) in the lungs.

I wish that I could give you a more specific answer. I will tell you that death from a hemorrhage is often described as quick and painless. I hope this was the case for your boy.

Thank you for your expediant reply. I am extremely impressed with this site and your considerations. Unfortunately it is too late for a necropsy, as I would have insisted on one but was not offered that by the service that came to get him :'-(

The blood pooled about and down his body looked as though it had just slowly flowed out of wherever it came from, it was not a vomited or forced out type of blood, just kind of leaked out.

I know I'll never know, but your statement that is was probably painless greatly helps me at this point. He was my big love-bug and I'll miss him with all my heart and soul.

Answer

If the blood seems to have slowly come out, perhaps the lungs are a more likely source. If he passed out in that location on the back deck, but continued to breath for a few minutes, the blood would then trickle out of his mouth and run down the body. (I am sorry if this sounds gory).

I think in the end, it sounds like you did not have any indication that this was coming, so please do not feel like you were to blame. Even if you were home at the time, it is likely that there is nothing you could have done to change the outcome.

Please take care,

Dr. Beth
