Question

I have a doberman that is soon to be 10 years old. he weighs about 95 lbs, and still shows waist. pretty big dog. He is having difficulty standing. Seems weaker on right rear. He does support himself with rt leg while urinating. He has been a little gimpy for awhile but needed no help standing until today. We give him glucosamine and chondroitin tabs daily. Is there anything else we can give him to help him out? He has had one other episode like this and was better the next day, approximately a year ago.

Optional Information

Age: 10; Male; Breed: doberman pinscher

Already Tried:
massage and exam of joints and spine, checking for pain. There does not seem to be any pain but this is a very stoic animal. I also gave him half of an aspirin after he ate. Approximately 125 milligrams.

Dear JD,

Did he do something to injure himself today?

Did he have a long walk?

Is he breathing normally?

What color are his gums?

Is he eating and drinking normally?

If he did, I didn't see it. H does tear around he back yard, thinks he is still a pup. No long walk. Breathing seems normal. Gums are pink. Eating and drinking are normal. He just had evening meal and drank like he always does.

Accepted Answer

Thank you.

You can actually give him two 325 mg aspirins total based on his weight. That is not even the maximum dose.

You already gave him 1/2. So you can give him another 1 1/2 tablets.

If he is not better in the morning, I recommend you take him to the vet for x rays.

He may have hip arthritis. www.VeterinaryPartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&A=1916

Intervertebral disc disease. www.VeterinaryPartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&A=2373

Or another problem.
