Answer

Hello and thank you for using JustAnswer.com

If the timing chain is making noise, you can replace the upper chain tensioner by removing the upper top timing cover. If you replace the lower timing chain tensioner you can replace it with out taking the timing cover off. It bolts in from the side. See images.

ok but my question is: how can I make sure Im replacing the bad one? cause the top one is slightly loose but is hard to see from where the noise comes.

also I only removed the plastic cover from the top of the engine , I didnt know that this car has a lower tensioner.

also I need to know if I need to move the engine out of its position in order to do this repair

Answer

You only removed the valve cover, If you have a timing chain tensioner problem, then I would just replace them both. If you wanted to start by replacing the top one, thats up to you. I would replace them both. The lower one is easier to replace than the top one any way.

If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask. thanks Jay!

Im sorry Jay , but I cant pay for your answer because if you see ,the answer you gave me, you never give me a real answer, your answers are very vague .

you just said replace both of the tensioners and you sent me a diagram with the picture of the screws and tensioners, but replacing the tensioners thats something I already knew.

my question was " HOW CAN I REMOVE THE TENSIONERS ". meaning that I need from you to guide me on how to remove them and what kind of tools I might need to do the job.

and by that Im not meaning you have to hold my hand and be with me guiding me on every step and answering my questions until I finish it.

what I expected from you was a diagram(which you did provided ) and a short list of steps on how to remove the tensioners thats all.

I use this service a few times and every time this is what I got: a final diagnostic and a diagram and a short list of steps to do the job.

sorry

I am sorry. Here is some information on how to install the tensioners.

To replace the upper tensioner, the upper timing cover would need to be removed. It is held in place by 10 mm bolts and 2 nuts. The cover sealed to the head with silicone. So it will need to be cleaned as well as it's mating surface on the head. So when done, when you apply new silicone to put the cover on, it will seal so you have no oil leaks. Then to remove the tensioner, it also in held in place by two 10 mm bolts. Once removed, the tensioner should pop and come right out. The new tensioner will have a pin or a lock on it to keep the tensioner pulled in. Put the tensioner back in place and secure the two 10 mm bolts, then pull the pin. It should then push out and put tension back on the chain. The lower tensioner is also held in place by two 10 mm bolts. This you can access from the back side of the engine with out removing the lower timing cover.

If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask. Thanks Jay!
