Question

Hi, one of our toilets is not getting any water in. It looks like that there is no water going through the pipe into the bowl. (even before the valve) everything else in that bathroom works. The faucet is getting water and the bathtub, too. What could be wrong?

Answer

Have you checked the supply valve? The valve could be stuck in the closed position preventing any water from flowing into the tank.

Answer

The only way to diagnose this is through the process of elimination. If there is pressure to the tank and it isnt filling up then the problem is the ballcock. If you feel that there is no water pressure then we need to test the shut off valve itself. Shut off the water to the house and remove the angle stop. Hold a pan underneath the open line and have someone turn the water on to the house only for a second. If you have pressure then the angle stop needs to be replaced. If there is no pressure at all with the open line then the problem is further down the line somewhere and you will need to contact a plumber.

We turned off the water and then turned it back on after unscrewing the pipe to the toilet, but there was no water coming out. The rest of the bathroom is getting water though and it's all connected to the same pipe. The house was build in 2003 so everything is still pretty new (5 years old) and we can't see any leaks anywhere.

The next step is to turn the water off to the house and remove the angle stop/shut off valve. Make sure that you hold a pan undeneath the open water line and only turn the water back on to the house for a second. This will determine whether or not the problem is at or before the angle stop/shut off valve. If water comes out of the open water line then you know that the problem is at the valve itself and it will need to be replaced. If no water comes out when you do this then you know that the problem is further down the line and there is nothing you can do without contacting a plumber.
