hi sunita,
welcome to justanswer!
let me explain like this for you:Bronchitis can be caused by exposure to cold weather/smoke/chemical irritant and pathogens(bac&virus)...
as a rule eliminating the cause (should stop smoking)will be the baseline recomendations, i suggest you to visit your doctor for diagnostic tests(ie sputum test(culture)/Xrays and some additional PFT(Pulmonary function tests).
meanwhile i advice you some tips that will help!
take OTC advil or motrin 400mg twice daily (this will decrease the pain and inflamation)take this medication if he is not allergic to NSAID's
if he is allergic to NSAID's take OTC Tylenol 625 Twice daily
for cough take Guiatuss AC or Robitussin A-C...this will decrease the cough/irritation.
BUT these are symptomatic treatments , as i mentioned earlier if the cause is bacteria or virus ,he have to take antibiotics or antiviral therapy..for prescription you have to consult your doctor..
As you are an indian i think (your name suggests) you must be knowing a loot of home remidies like honey+lemon (used as a cough remedy) or other methods that provide symptomatic relieve in this situation..
heres a useful link that will provide you some home remidies and preventive measures.

i think he may have Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)..since he was smoking for many years....the prognosis depends upon the severity and results of the tests(ie spirometry/and symptoms)...
as i m online i cant say for how long but you have to be in touch with your doctors for further tests and investigations till his symptoms subsides...
