Question

five mo. old doberman 40-45lbs When I squeeze his front right paw he squeels. No noticeable limp, very slight if so. Not from the pad, i can touch that, it's if i lightly squeeze or hold his "foot" area. I have him on orijen lg. breed puppy. We entered a show agreement with our breeder who told me to put him on calcium for his ears while teething. I am using a 600mg w/vitamin D supplement in addition to his approximate 5 to 6 cups per day (3 feedings) of Orijen large breed puppy.

You're the first in regards to this issue. I met a woman walking who recommended Dogcare.com to research my problem. She named it's diagnosis but that was impossible to remember on a walk so I input my info for first time. I'm a hairdresser and if I'm happy, trust me you'll get many more clients! Thanks for the ease of your website regardless if it solves my problem!

Answer

If its only one leg bothering him then this might be due to 'growing pains' which can be due to a number of issues. You can read about those here

http://www.labbies.com/dysplasa.htm

on a page put together by a labrador person but it applies to large breed pups of any breed.

But if he reacts no matter what foot you handle he may just have sensitive feet and need work on letting you handle them. You might find this article on teaching good behavior for grooming useful

or this one on nail trimming

But you may be seeing joint pain due to the extra calcium you are giving him. You might want to taper this off giving a little less each day and see if glucosamine chondroitin such as Cosequin does a better job of helping the ears go up. Glucosamine is used in cartilage production and the ears are cartilage.

Typically ears do go up and down while a dog is teething.

Hope this helps you!
