Thanks for writing in,
What you are describing is quite worrisome. The fact that he is losing weight and the tar like feces can indicate that he has a gastric bleed or ulcer of some sort. Dark, tar colored, stool is that color because of blood that has been digested. What I would suggest you do is bring this guy to your vet asap for some labwork and also some xrays possibly. Given his age, this could be caused from anything ranging from ulcers in his stomach to unfortunately intestinal cancer so seeing a vet right away is imperative. Do not feed him the morning of his appoinment to make diagnostics easier. I hope this helps to give you some direction with your guy. Best of luck.
Thanks for your input.
Unfortunatley we do not have the money for a full diagnostic exam on Farley. We contacted a local vet and they stated the exam/xrays, blood work could run over $200...way more than we can afford.
My main concern is that he may be suffering but not showing it (his tail still wags at us, he still gives kisses, he still barks at the door bell)
We love him but don't have the resources to do allot for him at this point.
Does the SPCA have cheap exams?
