Question

Our bichon ate a rice krispy bar wrapped in saran wrap--plastic and all. She's the only one in the family who is not upset. It was about a half hour ago. Do we need to take her to the vet emergency clinic? Thanks for your help.

Hello:

Depending on how much saran wrap was ingested this could cause an obstruction of the GI tract. If she were my baby and it was a good amount of saran wrap, I would head over to the ER vet to have it removed from her tummy before it enters the GI tract...you have about an hour or so before the digestion process starts. Of course, you can watch the stools for the next 24-36 hours to see if she passes it along with symptoms of an obstruction...vomiting, lethargy, constipation, diarrhea, refusal of food and water and fever over 103. The ER vet may induce vomiting, which I would not suggest doing on your own as it can get stuck and cause her to aspirate or they may go in with a scope and retrieval tool to remove it. Good luck to you and your little girl :)

Thank you. We don't know the exact amount she ingested. It was enough to wrap an approximately 2x2 inch rice krispy bar. Does that qualify as "a good amount?" It's probably been close to an hour now. Do we have a window of opportunity before it becomes a watch and wait game?

Answer

That does seem like a good amount for a little breed. It takes about 2 hours or so for a vet to be able to remove a non-food item so if you are going to have her checked, I would do so asap. After that, its a watch and wait...then, if nothing is seen within 48 hours or she begins to develop symptoms like above, have her checked (x-rayed) to see what is going on. If there is an obstruction, surgical removal will likely be necessary. :)

Thank you again, Dr. G. My husband has returned from the ER with little Dorie. The wad of plastic wrap was pretty good size, so it was a really good call to have the experts deal with her. Although it was a lot of $$$, it was probably cheaper than surgery and, of course, peace of mind is priceless. We're happy she's going to be OK and the whole family has learned a valuable lesson. We will sleep well tonight.

Answer

I am so glad little Dorie is going to be fine and the plastic removed. :) She is very lucky to have "parent's" that care so much about her. :) I also want to mention that I am not a veterinarian but I do have a lot of hands on experience. :) Good luck to you and Dorie! :)
