Question

Our female walker/blue tick mix hound had puppies about 2 months ago. The last week or so she had been verry sluggish loss of energy and wandering around. Just acting unusual. She wont get out of her kennel. I went to check on her and she wont even get up. I am worried i took food out to her. Any ideas of what could be wrong?

Answer

Hello, and congratulations on your (almost) new furry additions!

The symptoms you describe are of concern, and could be related to various conditions. Nursing moms (I'm assuming she weaned her pups not too long ago) can develop a condition called eclampsia, which is low blood calcium, and it can be exhibited by lethargy, disorientation and difficulty walking (painful joints).

Another concern would be pyometra, a serious uterine infection affecting unspayed dogs, very often after giving birth or after a heat cycle.

It would be a good idea to have her evaluated by a vet, immediately, so she can be diagnosed and treated, after a hands-on examination and blood work.

I hope your dog will be feeling back to herself, very soon!
