Info Request

Hello XXXXXXX

I will be very pleased to try and answer your question but to enable me to do so with accuracy I need to know a little bit more information, so first can you tell me :

1. Has your vet given you any diagnosis here as to which type of anaemia this may be?

2. Is your dog on any treatment?

3. Does your dog have any other diseases you know of going on?

This is just a information request for which you have not been charged, I am online at present.

Answer

Thanks for the quick reply,

Put very simply anaemia can have three main causes :

1. Increased loss of red blood cells as might happen in internal and external haemorrhage.

2. Increased destruction of red blood cells as might happen in diseases such as autoimmune haemolytic anaemia.

3. Reduced production of red blood cells as can happen in diseases affecting the bone marrow.

Some forms of anaemia can be treated, an example would be autoimmune haemolytic anaemia. This is quite a common disease and you would treat it with immunesuppressive drugs such as prednisolone.

If I have not covered your question fully enough or you would like to ask more I will be online for the next hour or so and I will be at your disposal.
