Answer

Hello tsmith-

This is the "free" Dilantin level - which measures the amount of dilantin that is "free" in the blood, and active, as opposed to a "total" level which also includes protein bound Dilantin. 90% of Dilantin is protein bound and only the "free" amount is active in seizure prevention.

A therapeutic level is between 1-2 micrograms/ml. A level of 0.66 is therefore a little low.

I hope that helps.

What does a little low mean? Are seizures near? or could they be coming again?

Accepted Answer

Tsmith--

A little low means that better seizure control is likely with a slightly higher dose. Dilantin has a fairly narrow window where it leads to optimal seizure control- Too low and yes there is a higher risk of seizures, too high and there are more side effects.

But just because your level is a bit low , one cannot predict when or if you will have a seizure. But this is possible. I would however discuss this with your doctor to see if your dosing should be adjusted.

I hope that helps and good luck.
