Question

My dog -- a bichon frise age 11 -- has an ear problem. He has been shaking his head and pawing at his ear the past 24 hours. I see that there is caked dried blood in his ear. He is mopey and very uncomfortable but not in terrible distress. An infection? Something else? Should I take him to the emergency vet (since today is a holiday) or is it okay to wait until tomorrow and take him to his regular vet?

Accepted Answer

It's most likely an ear infection. If you see dried blood caked around it's probable pretty severe. This is one of those cases where going to the emergency vet is borderline. It's really up to you. He's certainly not in any life threatening situation at all. It's really about his comfort. You know your dog. I am sure that his ear hurts. There is not anything over the counter you can safely give him tonight for pain. I know some people give asparin, but I recommend you don't. It has a very high rate of causing GI bleeding in dogs, and it will interfere with the pain meds your vet will give you when you take him in. At any rate, you won't be wrong whatever you decide to do. Watch his behavior, if he's really pawing/scratching or moping around--you might want to take him tonight.

Good Luck,
