Question

Hello, I have a 3 yr old 130 lb. Newfoundland that cant bear any weight on one of her back legs, (my husband took her outside to watch the New Year fireworks and she became frightened and bolted) What can I give her for pain and how often? Thanks for your help!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear julia1959,

From the history and clinical signs it sounds like your dog may have injured her cranial cruciate ligament in the knee joint. Either sprain/strain or tore the ligament. I would definitely rest her for now, very restricted activity. The only over the counter pain medication that I would recommend for now would be Ascriptin (buffered asprin) the extra strength is 500 mg per tablet. I would 1 1/2 tablet orally up to every 8 hours. I would give on a full stomach so that the medication doesn't irritate the stomach. It could cause some vomiting and diarrhea in some animals. This would be the safest drug until you can get her into the vet for an examination.
