Question

I gave my Springer Spanial a close hair cut and now she has very itchy bumps on her back where I used the clippers. They are all over her back. What can I do to rid her of these?

Answer

Thanks for writing in,

It is very likely that what you are describing is razor burn. WHat I would do, is if you haven't already bathed her go ahead and do this with a very mild soap being very careful not to scrub this area. Use very cool water, this will help to decrease the inflammation in her skin. If she is itchy you can give her some benedryl at 1mg/pound and also apply a hydrocortisone cream to the affected area. Be sure that she doesn't lick this off. Consuming a LARGE amount of this can cause some problems, but if she licks alittle bit then there won't be any problems. If this continues for a few days then be sure to take her to the vet as they will be able to give you additional medications to relieve her symptoms. I hope this helps her to feel better. Take care!

Thanks. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a bacterial issue. Is an anti-bacterial soap too strong?

Accepted Answer

It may be if this is just irritation associated with the clippers. If it doesn't get better then it could be due to a bacterial skin infection that was possibly present even before you trimmed the hair and then would need oral antibiotics and a medicated anti-bacterial shampoo. SO it depends really on what is going on, on her skin. If you have just bathed her then no worries, or you can rinse her in cool water to decrease inflammation. Hot water promoted inflammation so this is why cool water is recommended.
