Question

The ABS light on my 2006 Infiniti G35X came on. Also, even after turning the car off, I could hear a pump or motor running. Infiniti Dealer says I need new ABS Actuator and Relay for about $2,500. This car only has 62,000 miles on it. Does this make sense that these parts would go bad on a 2 year old car?

Optional Information

2006 Infiniti G35X

Already Tried:
I took it to the dealer to diagnose and they charged me $65. They had to order the parts and oddly enough, when I took the car home after the diagnosis, the ABS light was off and the ABS motor was not running when I turned car off. My guess is that they wacked the relay with something to unfreeze the contacts but I suspect this is a temporary fix at best. Do I need to jump all the way from wacking the relay to a $2,500 repair bill? Is this situation an indication that the parts are eventually going bad. Incidentally, they put their diagnostic tool on this and the codes that came back indicated "ABS actuator/relay failure".

Answer

I HAVE SEEN THE ABS ACTUATOR GO OUT IN LESS THEN A YEAR IN CARS AT MY OWN SHOP IT IS NOT COMMON BUT CAN HAPPEN AS FOR THE PRICE OFTHE PARTS SOUNDS A LITTLE HIGH TO ME SO AS FOR STATISTICS IWOULD SAY IT SHOULD NOT GO OUT THIS SOON IT COULD BE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM THAT CAUSED THIS

Are you saying that if the dealer codes show actuator/relay failure that:

  1. It is not repairable. There is nothing to fix. Need to replace the parts.
  2. I have read of a couple situations in Infiniti Forums where owners wacked the Actuator assembly with a rubber hammer and the light went out and did not come back. Is it likely that hitting the unit would be a permanent fix?
  3. The parts are actually in the $1400 range with about $500 for labor. They say 5 hours to replace. Does this sound about right for an Infinit G35X?

Accepted Answer

ME SPEAKING AS A SHOP OWNER LOOKING A A REPAIR LABOR MANUAL I WOULD SAY IT SHOULD BE AT LEAST A FEW HUNDREDDOLLARS LESS WHICH IT ALSO DEPENDS ON WHAT THE SHOP CHARGES PER HOUR MY BOOK SAYS 4 HOURS LABOR I WOULD NOT AGREE THAT HITTING IT WITH A MALLET IS A GOOD FIX IT MAYWORK HOWEVER CONSIDERING THE FACT THERE IS A SHORT
