Question

Was having problems with a clutch when I us to come of motorway the clutch use to sit on the floor and I had to manually pull it up and also slipping so got the Flywheel/Clutch/Slave cylinder changed. The problems above were solved. At times in First and Reverse gear the car will struggle to go into reverse and when the clutch is fully pressed to the floor the car s either still moving forward or reversing depending on gears selected. Only does this in 1st and reverse. They also struggle to come out of gear so have to switch on and off. So got the master cylinder changed today and the problem is still present. This is stressing me out. Can someone help? Got a Golf 2003 GTi Diesel ARL 150 BHP six speed gearbox. This car has been nothing but pain.

Answer

XXXXXX,

It sounds as though you have installed a faulty pressure plate or you have a faulty slave cylinder. Did you install oem clutch kit or aftermarket? Have you tried bleeding the system for air in the slave cylinder?

I have fiited a sachs clutch in the car and fitted a consentric hydraulic arm (slave cylinder), which I think is what the maunfacturers use for clutch and they also use the LUK one. Replaced with the SACHS Clutch kit, Flywheel and the slave cylinder first. After a few days with the problem of the gear stick not moving out of reverse and first gear I changed the master cylinder. But the symptoms still occur. Someone advised me it could be the gear selectors being faulty. I also tried to bleed the system for air but no difference. So I rang the supplier to see if they would take the parts back, they said no problem they would swap with new parts. So what shall i do? Either way I would need to open the transmission again another £150. Willing to spend money but want the problems solved as I have already spent near enough £600. This is frustrating and have been put of my car.

Answer

XXXXXX,

How does it shift if you leave the car turned off and just shift through the pattern?

As soon as the car is switched off the gears are fine and feel smooth and don't have to apply any force to change. After putting the car in reverse at times I can't move it back into neutral even if the clutch is fully pressed I have to keep the brakes pressed or the car will move backwards, same thing happens in the first gear. Once the car is switched off the pressue is released and the gears move freely. The gears only get stuck at times usually when the car is warm seems ok when cold and only happens in reverse and first gear.

Thanks for your help. Appreciate it, just seem I have been spending my Xmas and new years break just running around trying to get the car sorted.

Answer

XXXXXX,

You have used Sachs which is the best. There has to be either a problem with the installation or faulty parts. I've never had a Sachs fail like that. It is not hard to miss the alignment slots on the pressure plate. If you can shift it while not running, it is not the linkage. The pressure plate is not releasing. I bet they have it out of alignment.

Some mechanics have said to me that it may be that the gear selectors that are not functioning as they should. Can this be a possibility? Once opening the transmission is it possible a mechanic can see what the problem is because I dont want to do trial and error any more as its cost me a fortune and new symptoms are occuring.

So what you are saying it's the pressure plate? Could it not be leak elsewhere any seals maybe? What about the gearbox transmission fluid?

Answer

My personal opinion is if you can shift through the pattern without the car running, you don't have a transmission problem. I think the pressure plate is not releasing either due to improper installation or faulty parts. When you push in the clutch , the pressure plate releases the clutch disc and the car should not move. the disc is still grabbing the flywheel according to what you have said.

When I give the car to the mechanic to re open the transmission would he able tell if the pressure plate was fitted incorrectly or any part of the clutch was faulty?

How can I make sure that I don't have to open the transmission once again after that?

Are there any other parts that you would recommend me to change or check whilst the transmission is open?

Can the car be checked for the symptoms before closing the transmission again?

Answer

XXXXXX,

I'm just not convinced there is anything wrong with the transmission. I'm going to PM one of my buddies and get his opinion also.

I have to remove the whole transmission unit when replacing the clutch and slave cylinder. Hence why I am asking what to check or look for.

Thanks mate appreciate this. I will forward this site to my mate who all drive vw/audi

Answer

Check the clutch and pressure plate positioning. Remove the pressure plate and see if there is anything bent or out of shape. Before you remove anything, have someone turn the engine over by hand and watch the flywheel assembly turn over and see if it is turning true or out of round. good luck..

Thanks for your help. Im staisfied with your answers so far, just one more thing has your friend replied to your PM. Just want to make sure that I eliminate that it's not the gearbox and make sure it's actuallt the clutch.

Answer

Here's his answer. He is well respected and knowledgable.

There is nothing wrong with the mechanical part of the transmission, what he has is a clutch dragging causing presure on the trans. This can be caused by several items, one being air in the system, the other could be a clutch coming apart which prevents the presure plate from relasing completely. He will need to remove the trans and inspect the clutch and plate. I have also seen an issue once were a spring came loose from the clutch and wedged behind the plate causing you not to be able to completely release the clutch.
