Question

Trane Model TUX120R960V2 - The igniter recently failed on this unit and I had a repairman in to replace it. He informed me at the time that the unit had a 90 Volt igniter but he was getting a reading of 120 volts on the line coming into the igniter. He had a 120 volt igniter in his truck so was able to install it in place of the 90 volt to get heat back into the house. He then informed me that the circuit board contained a chip on the board that reduced the current going into the igniter down to 90 volts and that ultimately I would need to replace the circuit board ($650) and put in a 90 volt igniter ($120+). In addition to one other part which I can't remember what it was, but the overall cost will approach $1,000. However, the HVAC is working just fine with the 120 volt igniter in place. I don't see a need to replace all these parts for the sake of having a 90 volt igniter verses a 120 volt one. Can't I just carry on with the 120 volt igniter in place. Please advise

Answer

The repair person is giving you a line bull crap , The module moniters how long the ignitor is energized before the burners lite and conforms the ignition cycle to match the burner combustion extending the life of the ignitor by shortening the cycle.

What about the fact that there was a 90 volt igniter on there originally and there was a 120 volt reading on his voltmeter when he plugged it into the plug that the 90 volt igniter was plugged into?

Answer

I have never heard of a 90volt ignitor every one I ever installed was 120volt or 24volt on Honeywell smart valves and I have installed a lot of Ignitors

When I checked the maintenance manual for this model it references the igniter as a 90 volt igniter. I guess the bottom line for me is since there is 120 volts going into the igniter, and the igniter that was installed is 120 volts, and the HVAC is working perfectly with it, is it okay to just keep running on the 120 volt igniter. (the underlying question is what in the system allows the unit to operate with a 90 volt igniter. Is there something that reduces the voltage down to 90 volts as electricity flows into the 90 volt igniter? And, is it necessary to be concerned with it if everything else seems to be working fine?)

Accepted Answer

Right the module lowers the voltage to extend the ignitors life spand
