Question

I deal with suicidal thoughts and depression and cutting, and have been on and off for the past 6 years. However, often if I think about these thoughts, particularly if I am considering telling people about these thoughts, part of my scalp tingles sharply. It actually feels like my brain, but I guess it is my scalp. the area is (from my point of view) on the right hand side of my head, close to the top of my head, and about in line with my ear. The area that tingles is about the size of my fist, and the sensation lasts about 2 seconds.

Hi there,

Welcome to Just Answer.

It must have been really hard for you to endure all these symptoms over such a long time . Since by your own admission you have mentioned that you often get suicidal thoughts and depressive thoughts ,along with the tingling sensation on the right side of scalp, it seems like you are suffering from Major depressive disorder (MDD) along with anxiety( tingling sensation is an example of autonomic stimulation seen in anxiety disorders).

Now please tell me if you have been diagnosed as a Major depressive disorder patient, by a psychiatrist?

Also please divulge on the psychiatric medications you have been placed on?

Do you also suffer from increased and pounding heart beat, fearfulness , chest tightness, feeling of impending doom, excessive sweating , breathlessness, all these symptoms either occuring in episodes or consistently?

As for the treatment of your condition is concerned you need to be started on anti depressants , anti anxiety drugs , and mood stabilizers, along with psychotherapy. I will let you know of some examples of good drugs in each of the mentioned categories , provided you let me know the present medications you are on , and whom are you consulting.

I have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder by a psychiatrist, and I used to be on Wellbutrin and Lexapro, but recently stopped taking them with consent of my psychiatrist. I am also on Concerta and Doxycyclene.
I do suffer from fearfulness, feeling of impending doom, and excessive sweating, though not all at the same time, and just in episodes. I have been doing a lot better lately and don't wish to be on any other medication. Also Im going to stop taking the Concerta because it makes me irritable.

Answer

Hi there,

Well, thanks for the additional history.

Since , you have stopped taking wellbutrin and lexapro after consulting your psychiatrist, then i think you can keep off the medications , but in order to alleviate symptoms like suicidal odeation, pessimistic thoughts , low mood , you can seek PSYCHOTHERAPY ( counseling in lay terms), which is offered by a trained Psychotherapist. The main aim of psychotherapy is to provide Education, reassurance, encouragement and behavioural modification in order to alleviate depressive symtoms and for better adaptation to the circumstances and surroundings .

Psychotherapy is a good alternative to medications in depression, and since you have had fair share of antidepressants and now you are on recovery phase , Psychotherapy just suits you fine.

There are types of Psychotherapy which may be given in depressive disorder such as Cognitive therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, supportive psychotherapy , dynamic psychotherapy, but i propose Cognitive therapy is the most effective out of the lot.

Also , the fact that you concede of having symptoms such as fearfulness, feeling of impending doom, etc in episodic format, this is suggestive of Panic attack , but you may not worry as this is quite a common finding seen in depressive disorder and , also Cognitive therapy that i have mentioned for depression , is a good treatment for Panic attack also.

So, i suggest that you look for a PSYCHOTHERAPIST who gives Cognitive therapy , once you are started on this , you not only will improve but will also be able to do well without medications.

I hope my answer serves your question according to your satisfaction.

Wish you good health.

Regards...
