Question
Hello...I have been having a very sore mouth since March of this year. Heavy metalic taste and very sore gums. I take a few low doses of meds: effoxor, prozac, 1 mg xanax a day for anxiety.I have been on these meds...and much higher doses for over 11 years. My pharmacist and doctor do not think its my meds. I went to the dentist in June. He thought it might be my baking soda tooth paste. It wasn't. Cleaned my teeth and sent me off. I went to my family doctor in July. Did blood work for diabetes, I am quite obese currently at my heaviest...385 pounds. Doctor said my bloodwork came back fine. No diabetes...no high blood pressure, cholesteral were ok. Nothing out of the ordinary except my horrid weight. Heart has been fine to this point. I am on a weight loss program with a RG Deitician but just in the last few weeks..and have lost 15 pounds. But my mouth is always is horrible pain. The Tylenol and else doesn't soth it. Cloraseptic helps for about 5 minutes. Rinse with Biotene too.

Already Tried:
antibiotic rinses, having teeth cleaned, bloodwork, persciption side effects checked by both doctor and pharmacist. Tried eliminating foods such as coffee,, or soda, sugars, dairy, meat...nothing is helping the achy metal taste in my gums and tongue. Much of it is in the back where my wisdom teeth were years ago...removed.

Answer
The metallic taste in your mouth is not unusual, and not too serious, luckily. However, normally there are a few possible causes. First, medication. Commonly prescription drugs will cause this taste, but it is better to be on the drugs than not have the taste, so I do not recommend getting off the drugs to alleviate the taste. The second, and more probably cause, has to do with your oral hygiene. The reason I say this is b/c this can cause metallic taste as well as pain in the mouth. What I am referring to is gingivitis, periodontitis, or tooth infections. All of these have to do with the level of bacteria in your mouth, which creates the metallic taste. As the bacteria damage your gums or teeth, it will cause an overall ache in your mouth. The best treatment is a scaling and root planing procedure to remove the bacteria, followed by a prescription rinse of chlorhexidine to kill off the bacteria for home care. You should visit a periodontist, who is a specialist that treats infections like this. They are more specialized than your dentist and know more about the disease and treatment. Until you do this, there probably is no over the counter medicine that will help.
