Question

I am 44. My periods have always been normal, 5 to 7 days, not very heavy or light, and pain free.

My current period has lasted longer than any others as it has been almost two weeks. Since this is rare for me, I am concerned as if I should call my Dr. now or give it more time? Maybe a few more days.......

XXXXXX,

2 weeks is too long and you should call your doctor tonight. If you have been bleeding heavily for 2 weeks (pad an hour or more) you should go to the ER.

Thanks so much for your immediate response. I think I must clarify, first, I do understand your response as two weeks being too long for a cylce. However, the confusing part is your reference to the details meaning, my cylce is not heavy, as aIways I have been using 1 to 2 pads a day.

Answer

XXXXXX,

I understand. I did read that your normal periods are not heavy, but this period is not normal and so I did not assume the bleeding was the same either....but thanks for the clarification. I still think it is important for you to call your doctor and be seen in the morning. Because I cannot do an exam and quantification of menstrual bleeding is poorly reproducible, the recommendation to go to the ER is based upon a generic but accepted blood loss rate of a pad an hour or more.
