Question

I was put on the Pristique recently and found that there were no sexual side effects. I was put on the wellbutrin to combat the sexual side effects of the effexor.a few years ago and now there is no reason to take the wellbutrin. Can you give me a protocol to get off of the 400 sr I am taking per day?

Thanks

Hi,

I know you aren't going to like this answer, but it is the only right answer: You should only taper off the wellbutrin under the direct supervision of a physician. Although you were put on the wellbutrin simply to combat the sexual side effects, it is still altering the biochemistry of your brain. Now that you are taking Pristiq, there is a definite interaction between the two in your brain. Although you may well tolerate the termination of wellbutrin, the change may also set you into a relapse of depression or anxiety which obviously would do you harm. It is not safe to stop on your own, and you should ask this excellent question to your prescribing physician - and only your prescribing physician.

Good luck.

Thankyou for your quick answer. That would explain why I have experienced bouts of anger not experienced on the effexor and wellbutrin, I thought that the chemical makeup of Pristique and effexor was the same. I tried to taper off myself by cutting the tabs in half(200)sr because of my anger issues.

Answer

Hi,

Pristiq and effexor are essentially different versions of the same compound, but they have different potencies and different bioavailabilities. This is all the more reason to have the medications altered only under direct physician supervision.

Good luck!
