He has been to a psychologist who recommended Lexapro and just stated that it was anxiety but I know from living with him that it is more than anxiety. I am trying to find a psychiatrist close to us if necessary as he has finally agreed to go see a psychiatrist.

Answer

I agree that it sounds as though your familu member is suffering from Obsessive-Compulsive disorder. There is no known cause for this disorder, though it is believed to be primarily related to abnormal serotonin levels in certain parts of the brain involved in regulating anxiety and behavior. While medications such as Lexapro or other "SSRI" (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) medications often do reduce obsessive thoughts, compulsive behaviors and anxiety, often counselling and behavioral therapy known as "exposure response prevention" are also needed. This involves exposing a patient to the situations or objects which cause them anxiety fuel their compulsive behaviors, and in doing so they gradually learn to deal with these things without acting compulsively or becoming over-anxious.

I have included the following link for information on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and also how to find a physician who can treat your family member. I hope this has been helpful.

He has been on Lexapro for 1 month now and there is no sign of improvement. He just sleeps a lot more. Would you suggest we try a different medication?

Answer

Other medications which may be helpful include paxil, citalopram or sertraline to name a few. Sometimes additional medications for anxiety such as clonazepam or seroquel are also used to "augment" these medications as well. However, I suspect that he may not yet be on a high enough dose of Lexapro yet and that he may need more time on this medication before trying a different medications--your doctor will probably discuss this with him at their next appointment.

Depending on how he responds to the medications, he may also need to receive the other type of therapy I mentioned. There are many counsellors and Psychiatrists who are familiar with treating OCD. I believe the link to the article I mentioned above contains information on how to find these specialists in your area.

Best wishes.
