Question

My cat is bleeding from the nose, and noticeably in the stool. We have high iron in the water, does that mean anything?

Info Request

Hello,
I am sorry to hear about your cat.
Can you answer a few questions for me:
1. When did the bleeding in the nose and stool start?
2. Is the stool also diarrhea?
3. Is he sneezing or having any difficulty breathing?
4. How old is your cat?
Thank you

The nose started about a month ago, the stool about a week ago and not bloody every time. The stool is soft. He snorts out the mucus, but not really sneezing. Twelve years old.

Accepted Answer

Okay,
Well, I don't believe I can necessarily tie the two conditions together. Bloody nasal discharge for a cat this age can suggest many different conditions. This includes an upper respiratory infection, viral infection, sinus tumor or bleeding polyp in the nasal cavity, organ problems (especially, kidney disease).
I do not believe the iron in the water has anything to do with these symptoms.
The blood in the stool and being soft also can suggest several different conditions. This includes, inflammatory bowel disease, organ problems, cancer (due to age, we have to consider it), and intestinal parasites to name a few.
At his age, and the symptoms you are observing over this duration of time, certainly warrants veterinary examination and testing. We definitely need some tests to narrow down the two lists above and help to dictate a course of treatment.
Hope that helps.
Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.
