Question

We have a 5 yr old neutered male Abysinnian. He has had kidney issues in the past ( he was a gift to my husband in May) and recently he seems to vomit bile if he doesn't eat or something he is eating bothers him. I think he may have a digestive issue but my husband is getting upset with this. We have already spent about $1100 on him since May trying to see what was going on with his kidneys - We are not happy at all with the breeder that the kids got him from. We can't get any answers from her! She won't email me back when I have questions. I was told one time about using Pepto-Bismol but didn't know how much or when to use it. We are retired and can't keep spending a lot of money all the time. HELP!!

Optional Information

Age: 5; Male; Breed: Abysinnian

Already Tried:
He is eating Friskies Savory Shreds and he likes that best oif any food I have tried him on. The breeder was using a homemade food that had chicken, green beans and carrots. With the kidney issues I know he can't have lots of protein. The food had only about 8% protein in it. I will add a small amount of cooked chicken sometimes when I know he hasn't eaten well. He drinks a lot of water and that is what isprobably helping to keep his kidney issues at bay. I have not tried any meds for this yet. What about Nexium or Pepto Bismol? When do I give it to him. Could he have a very small stomach and not be able to eat very much at one time?

He has had high BUN. When we got him he had been bred and then neutered. I was so upset when I found out what the breeder had done to him. She had bred him up until the day before he was neutered and we didn't know any of this until we had him already. On the vet papers from the breeder after he was neutered the BUN was at 42 with a star beside it. When we took him to a vet where we live in WV to get him checked for some bloody stool in JUne the vet noticed the BUN and said in a month we need to check this again. We had a car accident, etc and did not get back to them until Sept. By this time he still had the bloody stool (at the end of the BM) and his BUN was up to 70. They did subcutaneous fluid and brought it down to 35. All seemed well. The vet put him on baby food ( high protein) to try anbd see if the stool issues was food related. Still was getting some blood but not as bad. One kitten our kids had from the breeder was fouhnd to have Tritrichomonas foetus so we thought for sure our cat had it since the kitten was our cat's son! Had him checked and it was negative. Still high BUN. In FL when we went down in October we had him checked out with total blood panel and his BUN was 89!! Had IV fluids and tests and it got down in 50s. He seemed fine and since he drinks a lot he hydrates himself well. He still has blood at end of stool - maybe hemmroids?? Vomits bile almost every day now it seems. We were going to put him down in October from the high BUN as the vet said he would just become lethargic and not eat. He is still doing well but this vomiting is not good. I don't want him to ruin the house.

Answer

Dear friend,

Boy you have had your hand full with this kitty. She was obviously an unscrupulous breeder who cared more for money than cats grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Lets talk about the blood. Add one tablespoon of infant rice cereal to a jar of baby food and feed that until the stool is nomal for two days.

Cats cannot take pepto so she must have said pepsid a/c.

A high BUN is common if the cat is dehydrated.

Cats with only 25% of kidney function can do fine via SubQ fluids which can evn be administered at home:

Here is info on CRF and FUS

Cats that eat dry can have bouts of dehyration.Indigestion is caused by inadequate chewing. Vomiting is very common. When acid reflux builds up in the stomach, they begin to vomit. Even if they have always eaten this,, they often become intolerant to corn and gluten which are used as filers in most supermarket cat foods.Vets push science diet because they sell it but it is not a great food as it too contains corn and gluten.

Lack of fluid in the bowel also leads to vomiting, Ingested hair can also be a factor.Anorexia for any extended time leads to liver damage and causes nausea and vomiting as well.

I would add some canned or baby food for him

Serve the two foods separately - do not mix them - add a half pepsid a/c tablet, crushed up into the wet food one time a day.

Put hairball remedy or even plain vaseline on his paw for himto lick off as well.

If his tummy needs a rest, feed baby food with no onion or garlic for a few days.

If he wont eat, and your cat is not diabetic begin by giving him two droppers (cc size) of unflavored pedialyte every ten minutes for an hour. Next water down(plain water) canned cat food or baby food chicken or turkey with no onion or garlic and give only one dropper every ten minutes for another hour. Wait two hours and repeat both. When he feels hydrated he will lick up the gruel on his own.

Give him droppers of unflavored pedialyte a few times a day to make sure he stays hydrated.

If he throws it up have him seen immedately.

Please let me know how he is doing. I will always be here for you.

I hope he feels better very soon.

Sincerest best wishes,

Terri

The food he eats is very moist. He doesn't care too much for the more firm food like a pate anyway. He licks the juice out of the food at first before he ever eats the food. He is staying hydrated I know as I was told to pull the hair from his neck and if it snaos back he is hydrated so that is still fine. I still have some plain chicken or turkey baby food and I will try it again. He loved it but I really think it also raised the BUN level even if it helped the tummy. Mabe we did it too long as the vet didn't tell us to stop it. Kitty was on it for about 2 weeks. I have some Pepcid AC and will try that too. He does like a treat that has a hairball formula but that probably isn't too good for him either. I only give him a few a day - usually when he uses his scratching post. He is such a beautiful cat and we really think we were duped by the breeder. Our kids have had problems with the kittens and I am so glad we didn't pay for our cat. His stool is firm in the beginning but will get loose and some blood at the end. Almost like he thinks he has more there and keps pushing to get it out - like maybe he has hemroids. Thanks for the suggestions and I will get on them now.

Accepted Answer

Hi again,

Baby food with no onion or garlic will not raise his BUN as long as he stays hydrated.

So try the pepsid a/c and also the infant rice cereal.

I am so sorry you have had so much trouble and I hope we can get him well now.

Blessings,

Terri

I didn't have Pepcid AC but had Pepcid Complete. I crushed that and added half a tablet to a spoonful of chicken baby food- plain. He loved it and ate it all. All of a sudden he started to play and has been frisky so maybe we hit on something for him to settle the stomach. I will try him on some vaseline too for any hairballs. He did have a "poopball" in his bowel a couple of months ago when he stayed at the vet to get hydrated and tested so we thought that was over with but not so. Maybe these are happening again.

I have also used canned pumpkin to help with loose stool and that works. He will eat it but I wonder if that can create more problems with too much fiber for him.

The kitty is doing better today and was yesterday too. I have been giving him abvout 1/2 jar of baby food with 1/2 Pepcid Complete ground up in it. He eats the baby food without any trouble anyway. Then during the day he eats regular food or a homemade food with green beans, chicken, broth and carrots all blended to a puree. He loves that too., I just don't want to give him too much protein. He drinks a lot of water all day long anyway. He was up and playing a lot the last two days and has not vomitted at all. He is even eating more too. Thanks for all your input.
