Question

Have a Mini Cooper S,this showed a engine failure lamp,"read off" gave a air leakage.Eventually we had a stopdue to turbo failure. My mecanic disassembled and said there is a slack in the turbo and also a oil dispensing problem.BMW mecanic says "turbo oil blockage",due to insurance they have repaired it but the car has only run100 miles now the lamp is on again, the turbo doesn't work att all times, even I can hear a "razzling" noice at the camshaft end, inner camshaft. BMW mechanic says that "turbo slack will become stabile when they reassemble",to me that sounds stupid. Can you give me any advice?Has there been many reported faults on this car? The car has only run 20000miles

Info Request

Hi, why was your regular mechaninc taking it apart when it should be under warranty?
the only problems i have come across on these are a noise from the chain area (tensioner etc) and noise from the vacuum pump at the end of the exhaust cam (no fix yet).
seen other bits and bobs but nothing massive, and never seen a turbo fail yet

Hi, warranty was just expired,I do prefer to go to my mecanic as it is a much shorter way there than to the BMW garage. My mec is running a garage where different brands are mended and served,he drives BMW and Audi himself and are specialized on these brands. He compets on the raceway in his own homebuild car,all engine parts etc are BMW,he has got the knowledge, the instruments and most of all a good smell, eyes and hearing,so thats why I consult him.Vincent C139808.6322393866

Hello, sorry but I don't have the code nr but what it meant was that there was an air leak somewhere that was not supposed to be.The yellow engine lamp goes on and off at the moment but the engine doesn't sound well, the engine sound is also definately louder that what it was earlier. The "kick" in the car is not there either

Accepted Answer

its possible the 'kick' has gone because of the fault that is storing, the only thing i've seen and had before air leak wise, is on the non turbo engine, from rocker cover gaskets & vent valves.
some of the airleak stored faults have previously had engine control unit reprogrammes, as there wasnt an airleak, but was flaggin as one.
the best thing i can suggest is to spend an hours labour at a bmw dealer (good well known one) and that should give them ample time to diagnose your problem, and give you a deffinate answer!

I have done this, they have had it for several hours, paid no attention to the engine lamp, they only dissasembled the parts, cleaned the pipes to the turbo, said it was due to "bad" oil (BMW's own oil choice),said one should not drive short drives.(We never do,have got 20 miles of driving to get to work)There is definately a slack in the bearings of the turbo, will they be thighter when you assemble the turbo with the engine again? At the moment the engine vibrates so much that it is unpleasant to go faster than 50mph,is that a normal functioning engine?I find the BMW dealer and workshop in Orebro,Sweden to be more qualified for mending bicycles than hi tech cars
