Hello,
I am sorry to hear about your dog. At first, it sounded as if you were describing a back problem (disc hernation). However, if it seems to resolve, that would be unlikely. A guess: This sounds a lot like a medial patellar luxation. This is a congential or traumatic condition where the knee caps literally pop in and out of place. Especially common for smaller breeds. It used to happen in both knees to my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel until she had surgery. Either way, a good physical examination by a veterinarian may help to narrow down where the problem is located. Make sure they palpate the knees.
Hope that helps.
Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.
