Hello Lauren, and thank you for using JustAnswer.com:

Unfortunately it is very difficult to get help for someone who doesn't want help. I am not familiar with the laws in the UK, but often if a person is a danger to themselves or others they can be hospitalized against their will for their own safety.

Can you tell me what makes you think your friend or family member has a problem? I can do a better job of helping you if I know what you think is going on, or at least what the behaviors are.

thank you for your reply,

we are worried about my 23 yr old brother. for weeks he has been sitting in his room and only comes out to eat dinner with us every evening, when he is asked whats wrong he says nothing and just tries to ignor us.

Tonight we had an arguement which turned into an aggrsive fight as he totaly 'flipped'. when we told him we was going to call an abulance as his behavoir was out of character he calmed down and began to tell us about this delusion he has been having.

He began to tell us that these people have been following him all his life tryng to get information out of him as he thinks he has am ability that no one else has. he insists we know these people but we dont and when we say we dont know them he says that we just think he is crazy and didnt tell us as he knew we wouldn't believe him.

we found paper in his room with mathematical 'equations' where everything in your life adds up to numbers and he thinks he can predict the futre with these and has a lense in his eye where he can actually see it. He keeps saying it started when he was age 4 or 5 when these 'people' started following him and he says he is going to go out and find them again.

since birth he has always had a healthy mental health up untill the last few weeks but he has recently given up smoking cannabis.

we dont know where to start on getting help as how do you convince someone that help is needed when he insists he doesn't need any?

can you give us some advice on how we go about getting him the right help?

thank you

Answer

Oh my goodness. He is definitely having some problems and he does sound delusional. You said he recently gave up smoking cannabis. Are you sure he is not using any other types of drugs?

You are going to have a very difficult time getting him help. You can try talking to the family doctor and asking for some assistance in getting him some help. Is he able to work? Does he seem able to function in his daily life?

The only way you will be able to convince him to get some help is if he believes it is in his best interest to get some help. Therefore, if he is having trouble with his job, or with relationships, you may suggest he talk to a counselor or a doctor about the issues with the job or the relationship.

I would definitely not suggest to him that he needs help due to his delusions. If you can get him to talk about his delusions, that is a good thing. Do not be judgmental, just listen and try to understand. He believes those delusions are the truth, and you will be wasting your time if you confront them. You need to find a way to show him that he will benefit from seeking help, so find out what he thinks is lacking in his life and offer to get some assistance for that issue.

Please let me know if you have any questions or need additional clarification on this issue.
