Hello-
I am so sorry you are going through this. I will certainly try to help you.
You said they opened her chest and found white stuff around her lungs.....do you know if they are testing for fungal diseases? They can either do that with a sample of what they saw or from her blood.
Ok....I will be on line most of tomorrow on and off....but likely around that time (I am mountain time zone). Talk to you then. Have a great evening!
Good Morning....I am here.
You are correct in that this wouldn't be parvo. Is she still in the hospital?
I hope your vet tested for other fungal diseases such as Blasto too....maybe you could call and ask?
There are two other things that come to mind with swelling of this type:
Possible cardiac disease (although her entire clinical presentation doesn't really fit well)
and a hypersensitivity reaction....maybe to a spider or scorpion bite?
Have they tried a steroid and an anti-histamine?
Is she currently on anything to help with the cough or the fever??? Or maybe pain medications?
Ok-
My biggest suspicion is that this is either some sort of bacterial infection or a fungal infection. Cancer is a very remote possibility because of her age.
If I were you, I would request that she put back on a broad spectrum antibiotic (something different than what the first vet used, since she got worse) and maybe start an antifungal drug just in case. Sometimes over the holidays, the labs that run these tests will take longer than usual and I would hate to see her get worse in the meantime.
She might not be eating because of the fever, but it may be due to the coughing (which is very tiring) or because her chest hurts (from the coughing and whatever the white stuff is). So I would also request a mild pain medication for her. It probably wouldn't hurt and would at least help her rest.
Are they force feeding her to help with nutrition? Have you tried to entice her with any foods that she usually likes? Ask your vet if you can bring her some boiled brown rice and chicken.
Hello again-
Well, just because she is negative for the valley fever doesn't mean it isn't some other type of fungal disease. I don't know whether it is a bacterial infection that would respond to clavamox or not, but she really should be on something and not just sitting there getting sicker. Since she isn't eating and has an empty tummy, an injectable antibiotic would prevent her from becoming queasy.
Again, at least a mild pain medication would be a really nice thing to do for her.
Don't be afraid to ask your vet to get more aggressive until those results come back. You are paying for her to be taken care of and although waiting for test results is unavoidable, fluids alone isn't trying very hard.
The antifungals I am familiar with are called ketoconazole and itraconazole, although there are others too.
The pain medication options would include buprenorphine, fentanyl, meloxicam, morphine, tramadol, etc. There are many other choices of these also.
I can't give out my phone number or personal email as per my contract with this website. However, if you accept my help by hitting the accept button, I can continue to help you. There is a time limit but it is generous.
Your email just shows up as x's on my screen....this is a built in safety feature to help protect the customer's as well as the experts. But please do keep me posted via this method. I will be thinking of her and you! Hitting the accept button pays me for my time, but you only need to pay once and we can continue talking.
Hi there-
Down at the very bottom of the page there is a help link....you may be able to find out what the time limit is. I know you only have to pay once.....some people pay on the very first conversation but I have talked at least two days to some clients.
