Hello and thanks for using JustAnswer.com. You report that you have a psychotic disorder due to opiate use prescribed by a doctor. That indeed is a rare condition. I am not sure what you mean when you say you want to know more about the nervous system and cell structure.

I do know that opiates are often prescribed long term for chronic pain, and if you were taking morphine for 7 years, you obviously had a serious medical problem. Did you doctor ever suggest methadone? Do you still have chronic pain? What medications are you taking now?

If you can answer these questions and be a little more specific about what exactly you want to know, I will do my best to help you.

I wish you well. Take care

I had fusion surgery for a disc compression in 1998 l4 to l5. The disc beneath it has a tear in it that was not an option for surgery the doctors did a discography and found that in 2000. It was also referred to as degenerative disc disease from another ortho surgeon. I went to a rehab in 1/07 and was withdrawn from 90% of my medications and given shots for 4 days. Once off the shots (I don't know what the meds were) the pain in my lower back returnd and arthritist in my left knee which I had surgery on in 6/06. I've been off all pain meds since 1/15/07 and was told it would take 3 years for my nervous system would get back to nornal. I'm on a lot of medicine now to help with accomplishing this. xanax ir, xanax er, effexer, geodon, solution of naltrexone, roserem, elavil, temapam, trazadone. I am going throgh a painful time. I keep being told it'll take 3 full years, but I'm having a hard time trying to understand how morphine works on the nervous system. Do you think you could help me? Thanks, XXXXXXXXXXXXX

Hello again: WOW, you have really been through a lot, and you are still on some heavy duty medications. I will take a stab at this for you, but if you are not satisfied with my answer, there is no need to pay.

Morphine works in the brain by blocking pain receptors. It is very effective at doing this, but the down side is that it is quite addictive, because the pain receptors become accustomed to the morphine and soon require more and more of it to be able to work normally. I notice that you are taking naltrexone, which is an opiate antagonist, meaning it blocks the pain receptors so that the morphine cannot have access. That will allow your brain to heal from the effects of the morphine.   Naltrexone is often used to help overcome opiate addiction.

The xanax is helping with the anxiety you are feeling due to the withdrawal from the opiates. Roserem and Trazadone are used to help you sleep. Effexor is for anxiety and depression. Geodon is a mood stabilizer and will help with the psychotic symptoms.

My best guess is that since you were taking morphine for 7 years, that altered your brain chemistry so significantly that it might well take 3 more years for your brain to return to normal. The good news is that your brain will heal, and the medications you are taking will help you to be more comfortable during the healing process. I can't tell you exactly how this happens, but I wish you well and hope this has been at least a little bit helpful.
