12-0901B-04 English Composition II

: Phase 1 Discussion Board

Deliverable Length: 2-3 paragraphs

Details: During a planning meeting with the editors, you realized that they need a good model for a research paper for the new composition textbook they are developing. To begin the process for developing your sample research paper, you choose to prepare notes discussing your topic and strategies for developing the research paper. Be sure to include the following in your discussion:

What topics would you like to research and write about?

Why are you interested in these topics? What strategies will you use for narrowing your topic?

What is your purpose for your paper? What do you think will be the biggest challenge in writing a college level research paper? What information do you need in order to write an effective descriptive essay?

2) Details: Your meeting with the Associate Editor was very successful. However, you feel that he didn't grasp what your intended point was. You have decided that the best way to convey your thinking is to construct a descriptive essay for him.

Please include the following:

The topic you have decided to research

The Who, What, When, Where, and How of your topic.

The intended audience of your paper and how you intend to address the needs of your audience.

The different controversies and questions that surround your topic and why these controversies are important

Remember to include a reference list at the end of your submission.

3) Details: In putting together the descriptive essay, the Associate Editor has asked if you would be interested in helping the other subject-matter departments of the company better understand the basics behind writing effective works. He feels that if this message is conveyed properly and efficiently, the other subject matter departments will be more comfortable incorporating the functions into their curriculums. Beforehand, you meet with the Language Arts department to get some ideas together. As a group, they have asked for you to put together an informational presentation for writing a persuasive/argumentative essay. You will be creating an argument for the topic/controversy you have chosen for the descriptive essay in phase 1.

Please address the following in your discussions:

What information do you need in order to write an effective argumentative/persuasive essay?

What research question or controversy would you like to find an answer to in your research and what research strategies will help you find an answer to that question?

How do you think the writing process will be helpful in putting this essay together?

What do you think will be your biggest challenge in putting together this argumentative essay?

Remember to include in-text citations throughout your text and a reference list at the end of your submission.

4) Details: The Language Arts department was very pleased with your ideas and your information. They have asked that you go ahead with putting this essay together for the company to use as an example.

Please include the following:

Introduction:

Introduction and description of controversy.

Your opinion/point of view on the controversy (your thesis statement)

Body:

Reasons: statements that tell the reader why your opinion is valid and reasonable. Reasons are because statements.

Evidence: proof that your reasons/argument is true/valid. Evidence can be facts, statistics, appeals to authority, personal experience and examples, etc. There must be evidence to support each reason.

Conclusion:

Sum up your main reasons and restate your position

Make a call to action; ask readers to take an action based on your argument

A combination of the above.

Please submit your assignment

5) Details: Recently, your company has decided to put together some resources concerning plagiarism. In order to prepare these resources, you have been asked to participate in a discussion of plagiarism.

You need to discuss the following questions:

What is plagiarism?

Why is plagiarism an important issue in college and in the workplace?

We live during a time when technology, i.e. the Internet, gives people fast and convenient access to information. With the click of a mouse we can access information from around the world and by cutting and pasting can easily add that information into our own writing. What ethical problems does this easy access to information cause in the area of academic honesty? How can students deal with these ethical issues?

Remember to include in-text citations throughout your text and a reference list at the end of your submission.
