i have a ac with no auto reset. can you over ride the on/off so when power goes out it will turn back on automaticaly?

Yes, but overiding safety switches isn't such a good idea. Is this a Rheem unit with the red button? If not, what brand and model unit is it? Ron

it's a edgestar freestanding unit model ap1000hw.

You can combine a thermostat and a 24 volt coiled and 220volt contractor together When you get a call for cooling the t-stat will power the 24volt coil and pull in 220volt contractor energizing your ac unit
