Answer

Hello XXXXXXXXXXXXXX,

There is a minimum amount that you have to earn before you are required to file taxes. For the tax year 2008 that amount is $8,950 for a single taxpayer.

In years prior to 2008, that amount would have been slightly lower be a couple of hundred dollars each year.

However, sometimes even if you do not earn the full amount that requires you to file a return, you may want to do so anyway just to claim a refund of any taxes which were withheld, or also to claim the earned income credit if you qualify. It would just depend on how much you made each year as to whether or not you were entitled to any credits. But if made less than $8,950 for 2008, you are not required to file a return if you are a single taxpayer.

Hello again XXXXXXXXXXXXXX,

It will certainly not hurt you to file just to see if you have any refund coming to you for this year. Also, congress may approve another stimulus rebate next year, and you need to file a tax return to qualify for that rebate if it is approved. So for sure, you should file a return this year once you get your W-2 forms.

As far as previous years, as long as you did not make over the minimum required to file for those years, then you would not owe any taxes. If you made more than the minimum, then it would depend on how much taxes were withheld from your checks as to whether or not you would owe for previous years.

However, as I said, if you made less than the minimum required for filing a return, then you would not owe any taxes.

Thank you.
