Question

I am trying to install a hardtop on a 1990 Geo Tracker. The top appears to be too small but in fact, is the correct top for this Tracker. The top does not fit snug against the front side? We took the weather stripping off of the Geo because the hardtop came with its own weather stripping. The installations instructions say to remove the weather stripping on the Geo and just use te stripping on the hardtop. What is the trick to make it fit correctly?

We took the weather stripping off of the Geo because the installation instructions say to take the stripping off of the Geo and use the weather stripping that came on the hardtop. When we set the hardtop on the Geo, there seems to be a gap on the front side. We tried to pull it forward and down but it does not close the gap completely. It appears that the top is too small but it is in fact the correct top for the Geo. it isn't an after market item or generic, it is an original and correct part.

Answer

Hi Geo tracker2.

When I installed my hardtop on mine (originally a softtop) I never removed any weatherstripping. I found some silicon spray on the weatherstrip helped it slide together easier. Pushing from the rear gate to wiggle it on. The weatherstrip on the vehicle sits in a channel on the top and needs patience to get it to fit together. I remember swearing and cursing when I did it by myself. Once I got it on, I never removed it. Try the silicone spray, it will help everything slide into place much easier.

Also, the front targa piece. I had to make spacers out of plexiglass to lower the front latch anchors by the windshield. Once I switched to the hardtop, it wouldn't latch properly. By making the spacers, It snugged the top down nice and tight into the weatherstrip.

Hope that helps.
