How can I persuade my father 69 years old, who I suspect suffers from schizoaffective disorder, to see a psychiatrist?

Optional Information

Age: 69; Male, United Kingdom

Already Tried:
I have recently (in the last year) discovered that my parents' relationship is completely destroyed due to my fathers (69 years old) belief that my mother (60 years old) is having affairs with various people for the past few years. My fathers belief is based on delusions of seeing my mother enter a person's car and various other similar episodes without however any evidence other than his conviction that he has seen all these episodes with 'his own eyes'. These episodes he has described to me and another relative however we are fully convinced that they are indeed delusions.
My father is otherwise fit and well and has no other major comorbidities apart from ischaemic heart disease treated with coronary artery bypass grafts a few years ago.
There have been no concerns regarding suicidal or homocidal ideation so far.
I have tried to persuade him to see a psychiatrist for his mood swings (happiness-sadness with no extreme behaviour so far) however my father feels that psychiatric consultations are 'for the weak personalities' and he has refused to see one.
I have also persuaded his heart surgeon, who he trusts, to talk to him about seeing a psychitrist and this was also unsuccesfull.

Hi there,

The type of delusion your father is suffering from is called as Delusion of jealousy (Othello syndrome) and is quite an evidence to term him as someone having Paranoid Disorder and Psychosis as i am sure he must also be having auditory hallucinations along with such delusions.

I would strongly recommend admission for your father in a well etablished psychiatry set up under the guidance of a psychiatrist,&; he needs to be started on Anti psychotics , mood stabilizers and if required ECT.

Since his present psychotic condition must have caused social , professional , and functional disruption in his and the life of near and dear ones , so it is best that he gets proper treatment in an inpatient department of psychiatry for 2-3 weeks and then he can continue his treatment from home .

But as you have mentioned that he is absolutely averse to the whole idea of seeing a psychiatrist then it leaves you know option except you try to seek help from a psychiatry institute and try to get orders from the court which will make you gaurdian of your father since he lacks reality testing and then on your consent the psychiatry institute may admit him and start on his treatment.

I know this sounds very cold and something which you feel if you do will violate your father's rights , but you need to take a call here and do this for his own benefit as he is not able to realize the facts and believes only in fiction , and before things go out of hand , as patients of his nature can turn to violence and aggression , so make a move as early as possible.

I hope my answer serves your query according to your satisfaction.
