Question

I have a congo african grey who is 8 years old. She developed what looks like blood in her eye itself which is covering part of her pupil as well. I figured I would wait a few hours to see if it goes down. I came home and see her other eye is a bit red as well. What is this from? What should I do? I just moved and need to research a vet in my new hometown. can this be a result of stress or is it a physical problem? Any help or suggestions would be great.

Answer

Log onto www.aav.org and try to find an avian vet in your area. Unknown cause but it sounds like you are describing a condition known as hyphema when blood gets into the anterior chamber of the eye. Again, there are many potential causes (including stress and trauma) but I always take special precautions with any special sense organ and lets face it - you only get two eyes so we have to take the best care of them possible. Try to get her seen as soon as is feasible for you. In the interim, keep her low-stressed (no exercise/playtime to increase her heart rate). Good luck - DocB :)

Is it possible that this can come from scratching her eye? I noticed scratches around her eye. I just put her in the collar that is meant to prevent feather picking and mutilation so that I can see if it gets better. I am wondering if she didnt physically do it to herself. If this is the case would I see improvement by tomorrow? I did not want to cut her nails today because I didnt want to add added stress. How would I know if it is coming from interior or external sources or is there no way to know?

Answer

Is the blood itself coming from the eye/tissues that hold the eye in place (conjunctiva) or does it look like it is 'trapped' behind the clear surface of the eye itself (cornea)? If it is actually BEHIND the cornea then it's highly unlikely that she did it herself...you may see it clear completely but it def. still warrants a PE....and great call on not trimming nails today! I've had Grey's toweled that appear to 'bleed' minute quantities in their 'tear' but again this is blood that is in the tear film and NOT compartmentalized behind the cornea. Can you tell? doB

It looks like its behind the clear surface but it did start more clear looking, like a pink eye, but now it looks a bit more cloudy in one eye. the strange part about it is that over the passed few days it got better and then worse. (I did not see that personally because my brother in law had her for the 2 weeks that we were moving and she just came back last night.) there was no blood coming from her tear duct or any blood outside of her body. as I mentioned she does have scratches on her face around her eye area which made me wonder if she could have done it to herself. Do you think this could be internal bleeding?

Accepted Answer

Internal bleeding inside her globe/eyeball itself (aka 'hyphema') aboslutely...hence the need to really get her checked out. Once examined your vet may indeed just want to prescribe some drops or wait it out as the fluid in the eyeball is continually circulating & filtering (think of a pool) so it does have the potential to 'clear'. I'm just not comfortable without knowing the underling cause.. docB :)
