My dog has been diagnosed with lupus. Her nose and ears are scabby and sometimes sort of raw looking. I asked this question Dec 10th and paid $15 and never got an answer.

I have been giving her 2000 iu vitamin D daily and it seems to be helping her lupus a lot. I just heard that too much vitamin D is harmful. She weighs about 67 pounds. How much is too much and what damage will it do?

Answer

Hi XXXXXXXXX, let me see if I can help.

Discoid lupus or lupus erythematosus is one the the most common auto-immune diseases of the skin. Treatment is usually prednisone or a topical steroid, vitamin E and the goal, after the skin is normal, is to move from steroids to tetracycline and niacinamide.

A great article can be found at www.petplace.com and enter discoid lupus in the search box.

I'm not aware of the use of vitamin D in this disease, but the dose of vitamin E is 5 to 10 units per pound twice daily.

Hope this was helpful and sorry about the wait.

I was told that too much vitamin D can cause kidney calcification. Is that true?   If so will two 1000 iu pills daily be too much?

Answer

In dogs, daily administration at 1000 - 2000 units per pound may cause toxicity after 1-2 weeks. Yes, you can get calcification of kidneys, heart and intestinal tract. Diagnosis would be by bloodtesting for the calcium level.

My dog weighs 67pounds and I give her two 1000 iu vitamin D pills daily. Not 1000-2000 iu per pound.

Accepted Answer

Sorry I was not clear. Since your dog weighs 67 pounds and the toxic dose is 1000-2000 units per pound it seems that the dose of vitamin D you have been giving is well below a dose that would cause problems.
