My Volvo V50 wagon has about 25K miles on the odometer. It was tuned up only 6 months ago. Last week the "check engine" light suddenly lights up. The car is running well as usual. I can't detect or feel any problem. Is this an indication that there is something seriously wrong with the engine and requires immediate appointment with my dealer?

XXXX. most likely if the car seems to drive normally it is not a majorproblem. the check engine light could come on due to your gas cap not being on properly or tight. I would suggest getting the codes read in your car as soon as possible. most major auto parts stores such as autozone, kragen, etc car read your codes for free. I would suggest the dealer or a volvo specialist in your area.

If you check the gas cap and find it not on properly reinstall in properly and wait a day or 2 and light may go out.

I called Kragen in my neighborhood and was told that they do not provide this service. However, when I tried to start my car to go to a Volvo dealer to have them read the computer the warning light disappeared! I can't think of any reason why except : maybe it was the gas cap afterall but it took almost 3 days for the warning light to be turned off!

Yes it is possible that it was caused by the gas cap. if the runs ok, and no light wait and see if it comes back, then go to the dealer. at can take a couple of days if certain conditions arent met to run the test.
