Swelling and painful calf should consider firstly as DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS(DVT)
but there is no clots in Ultra sound scan ,
than i will advise you to go for a CT /MRI scan,these can provide more clear picture if a clot is present
there is blood test called ""D dimer"" which is usually elevated in DVT
apart from this VeNOGRAPHY can also helpful to rule out DVT
Because according to age and symptoms its look like DVT
but apart from DVT it might be some degenerative Muscular disorder
