Hello XXXXXX,

When you say losing hair, do you mean there are areas of skin where there is no longer any hair? Are there any scabs or crusty lesions?

No, the hair, which is normaly fine and curly, has thinned and become more like peach fuzz. not all over, just on my head and neck. The rst of my coat has gotten thinner and shorter as well. I know Cornish Rex coats can range from fluffy to fuzzy, but I used to have more hair!
I do also have the occasional outbreak of allergic dermatitis which I have treated with low dose pred when I have a flareup.

I wonder if this would be a seasonal variation you are seeing. Ususally if hair is thinner or shorter, it is morestubbly and coarse than like peach fuzz. When like peach fuzz that is more consistent with new hair coming in. If you pet the hair "against the grain" is it real soft or real stiff?

It is soft.
It's weird that I would lose hair in the winter, right?

Accepted Answer

Actually not. They lose hair year round and have an increase in turnover of hair twice a year (spring and fall). It can increase also if stressed. Stress can be due to any change for a cat. New people around, people no longer around, changes in hours people are home, new pets in the house, wind blowing east, wind blowing west, etc. The last 2 were a joke. For some cats any change can be a stress. I am afraid without seeing it it is hard to tell you much more. If there aren't bald areas and the cat isn't uncomfortable you may not need to get it checked. Otherwise I would have it checked by a vet.

I have been a veterinarian since 1989 and see many cats in my practice.

Answer

Also, sometimes a change in diet can help with any abnormal skin/coat conditions. I like Nutromax for dogs and cats having skin/coat issues that don't seem to have a specific cause.
