1998 Mergury Mystique with a 2.0L 16V Ztech. Auto trans. The timing belt broke so I need to bring the crankshaft to TDC and the cams. Since the belt broke, I do not believe the crank and cams are in their correct position. I do have a Chilton manual and what if shows for the 2.0 and what I see is slightly different. On the back of the cams is a "slot" for a cam timing tool (flat piece of steel), but no indication of which way is "up" to be TDC on the cams. chiltons shows a "notch" on the crankpulley/dampener, but htere is not one on this vehicle.

Accepted Answer

If you look at that slot on the back of the cams they are a bit offset and the tool will only fin when the cams are in the correct direction. As far as the notch there should be one but there is alos a tool to set the crank at the correct position, pic below,
