I recently purchased a 1999 528i BMW. I know the history of the car because it has been my moms for the past 6 years, and has been well taken care of. Besides the recent oil change I haven't done anything special to the car. Well about two weeks ago I noticed that the car has started to shift oddly, instead of smoothly going into gear it would stiffly jump. Then the next week, I started to notice a weird idling, it would idle at 1000rmp or so, but the whole car felt like it was shaking, almost like not enough gas was getting to the engine. Now this morning, I started it up as usual to go to work, cleaned the ice off the windshield, and put it in reverse out of the driveway, but when i put it in Drive (automatic) it took ALOT of gas to get it going. Almost like it wouldn't shift out of 3rd gear, which I noticed when i tried to manually shift it, nothing happend. So I looked at the dash and noticed my engine light, and a Yellow gear with an ! point in it. My owners guide says this is a Transmission Control Module, but im unsure what this is. Would possibly getting a transmission flush fix this? or does anyone have any advice on what I could do to fix this problem?? Thanks for any help!

Hi what is the mileage on the car? There are a few problems this could be. First with the engine light on and the transmission light on there will be fault codes stored in the control modules. It would help alot to get the codes that are in the systems. If you have like a auto zone nearby they will d this for free. That will help us pinpoint the problem. Engine issues the intake boot is very common to crack getting a vacuum leak. mass airflow sensor. throttle assy. Transmission could have the transmission fail. shift solenoids . torque converter. There are many reasons. Getting the fault codes will help. The transmission has a lifetime fluid in it very expensive fluid normally there is no flush service ever done on theses cars. At this point will not help. Thanks mike

I just spoke to an Autozone rep and will be taking it in to get the codes for you in a few hours. Since the car still drives (feels like its in 3rd gear) is it ok to drive it to the autozone which is about 5 miles away (non-highway)? the mileage is about 113,500. I don't quite understand by what you mean with the "Engine issues the intake boot is very common to crack getting a vaccum leak"? Could you explain this a little more please? I've also been doing some research and many people recommend replacing the Transmission Control Module because if the plastic casing around the wire is damaged, it could short out the system? Thanks for your response!

Hi yeah just dont keep driving it around it is stuck in third gear so the transmission will be slipping alot to get rolling. You said it idles funny and was shacking that is not a transmission issue. never replaced a transmission control module for a transmission fault. Could it happen yes. Never seen it. What you say you found on internet cracked casing never never never seen that one??????????? Please reply back when you get the fault codes. I know you say the car was taken care of but have replaced many transmissions for transmission going into fail safe. But lets see what the faults are first. Thanks mike
