Question

I have a mixed breed bitch, 13 yrs old. Recently she has started shaking - seems to be more on/off than continual. The heating in the house is set high and she also has a fleece like jumper i put on her. However neither seem to have helped. She does not feel cold to touch either, so i am worried it is more than simply coldness. It occurs randomly throughout the day, there seems no specfic time it occurs. IS this a sympton to anything, should i take her to see a vet?

Info Request

Does she act normal otherwise?

Any increase in thirst?

Increase in urination?

Vomiting?

Weight loss?

Decrease in appetite?

Anxiety?

Increased panting?

Skin or coat conditions?

Pot belly?

When was her last blood profile?

Can you describe the shaking in more detail? Is it trembling or is she having uncontrolled shaking with paddling and loss of bowel or bladder control?

Does she seem aware of her surroundings when this happens?

Thank you

Theresa

there is a decrease in appitite and an increase in panting. the shaking is like trembling but does not appear to be out of control. drinking and urinating does not seem to have changed. everything does appear normal. I have a second dog who is completing fine and the house is really warm. i am only concerned because it appears as though she is cold - even though we are doing all we can to make sure she is warm. i dont think she has a blood profile?? not sure what this is? she has only seen the vet twice, other than when a puppy, in her life.

A lot of smaller breed dogs do tremble and it doesn't necessarily mean that they are cold. Some tremble because they are anxious, stressed, and/or happy. The trembling could be caused by pain or discomfort. She is 13 so arthritis may be an issue. She may not be feeling well. With a decline in appetite my concern is that there may be some changes in her organ function, particularly her kidneys. Hypothyroidism also may be an issue. I do suggest that bloodwork and a urinalysis be run on her especially since she hasn't ever had this done. I would try to take her temperature rectally to see if she has a fever. A normal temperature for a dog is 100-102.5F. If her temperature is higher than this I would be sure to set up an appointment for her to determine where the infection is located. I think the first thing you should do is check her temperature and then I do recommend setting up an appointment with her vet to have a blood profile run.

Please let me know if further assistance is needed.

Theresa
