Hi Sam, I too am concerned about your big boy. While you might not expect him to be injured while in a cage, the loss of the use of both rear legs initially makes me wonder if he has ruptured a disk in his back. Back injuries are common in dogs and may occur quickly. While some dogs just demonstrate pain or poor control of their legs, others will suddenly collapse in the rear legs and are unable to stand,and occasionally are unable to feel anything in their legs. Now there certainly are other, less common causes of rear leg weakness but what is most important to me is that he be evaluated as soon as possible. Depending on the degree of damage, this may be a dog that will need surgical intervention within 24 hours for best outcome. I would anticipate your vet will do a physical and neurological examination, take x-rays or other imaging tests and help you make a decision on what is the best course of action for your dog.
