Question

our female rhodesian was spayed a week ago. They used surgical staples to close the outer incision. 2 days after the surgery she developed a seroma in the incision. she is now on abx (keflex 3x daily for 10 days) and seems to be doing fine. However her incision site is pouched out. It doesn't appear to be overly red or painful. It is no longer draining either. could this just be fluid pocket under the incision?

Answer

We do see seromas develop under incisions occasionally and unless drainage is established for long enough the seromas may reform. More often we see swelling of the incision as a normal post-operative process where the tissues swell from the surgical incision. In addition, swelling may also result secondary to the suture used in the abdomenal wall but no fluid pocket is formed. Since she will be seen for staple removal in the next 4 to 7 days, the swelling can be safely re-evaluated at that time.
