Question

onan genset 5000 mounted in 1999 Gulfstream motorhome model #5.0BGE FA/126100P runs with periodic miss. I have replaced spark plugs, replaced spark plug wires, tried spraying carb. cleaner for possible plugged jets. I removed spark plug wire from closest plug and the miss becomes constant. So to double check spark plug integrity, removed new plug and replaced with old plug and operated exactly the same. Then, the last thing I tried was removing new plug, installing old plug loose in cylinder, and then looking at spark on plug with the new plug touching ground. It appears like an orange spark which leads me to believe that is the problem, because sparks should be a strong white/blue. Could this problem be in the magneto or the distributor since it seems to be only on this cylinder?

Answer

Hello,

The problem does not sound like spark problem. It sounds more like a fuel related problem that is fairly common in gensets like yours. The carb is most likely plugged in a jet or passage. These carbs can be cleaned by completely dismanteling all parts and placing parts in an ultrasonic carb tank or something compatible. It is a job for a professional or a strong do-it-yourselfer. For detailed info on exact proceedures of carb removal and cleaning just ask and I would be happy to send more info. It is not usually possible to clean carb well enough when still attached to motor although sometimes you will have have luck.
