Question

I have a flame hair taranula as a pet. I thought she or he now was molting, but I am thinking different. The spider got to where the eating was slowed eventually stop. So therefore, when I thought the spider was gonna molt, well it has been 3 weeks since last movement. The cage has already started to bring a smell. I don't want to move the spider if in case she/he isn't dead. The legs are curved under as well. What should I do: remove and assume the spider is gone or wait. I know it does take up to 5 months to molt as well and said if they are dead they would be on back instead of sitting position. Please get back to me. I'm really worried and wouldn't want to lose the spider, but don't want it affect my other spider and kill it to. Thanks. Please get back to me asap.

I have left the spider alone just in case it was molting, put water in so it would be humid enough just like the web site said to and taken out crickets as well

Hello,

It can be difficult to tell if a tarantula is dead. They don't necessarily have to be on their backs. If the legs are curled up underneath the tarantula, that usually means it is dead or dying. An odor is another sign of death.

It would be very unusual for a tarantula to take months to molt. They usually stop eating for a few days to a few weeks ahead of a molt. Then they often spin a 'cradle'; or dig a burrow (depending on species). The molt itself should only take a few hours. After that, the spider may be inactive for awhile longer, until its new exoskeleton hardens. You can read more about normal molting here:

I suspect that your tarantula is dead. You can try removing her, very gently, in case she's isn't. You should be able to tell whether she's dead or alive with certainty when you move her. If you want to wait awhile, you can, but it doesn't seem very likely that your tarantula is still alive. If you have more questions, just let me know by clicking on REPLY.

Yes, being sunken in is another sign of death.
