One of our pet mice is writhing and twisting. It is as though she has lost her balance and continues to roll over to one side again and again. What can we do?

Thanks for the question XXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXX.

Sorry to hear about your pet ...

I have seen many mice like this in my professional life and there are three main possibilities as to what causes it.

1. It can be a parasite which affects the brain.

2. It can be middle ear disease which affects the mouse's balance mechanism.

3. It can be spinal / neck lesions.

I am sorry I cannot suggest any home remedy here, there is nothing much you can do on your own, my advice is that you should have your mouse checked out by a vet who is familiar with rodents and get some treatment started. Depending on the probable cause drugs such as antibiotics, steroids, and anti-parasite drugs have been used to combat this disease.

I have to tell you that the cure rate is not high at all, of those that are not cured some adapt to having a permanent head tilt but most have to be put down because the disease is so extreme.

If I have not answered your question fully enough or if you would like to ask more I will be on line for the next hour or so and I will be pleased to discuss your question further.
