Hello, I have a Trane XE 1100 Heat Pump. It has worked like a champ and we mostly use it to cool the house since we live in florida. However this morning it was cold and I noticed this morning the unit was not heating as usual. I looked inside the outdoor compressor and noticed that ice had acculumated around the coils-fins. I also noticed that the unit did not go into the reversal cycle as I've seen-heard it do before ( where it looks like it is blowing vapor on a cold day). Now that the ice has melted it is working fine, but I'm concerned it will ice up again when it gets really cold. could this be a broken reversal valve?? Or an incorrect charge on the unit affecting sub cool, superheat cycle?? Would appreciate your thoughts. thanks andy

more than likely you have a bad defrost sensor. you can check the defrost board yourself.remove the outer door, ther will be a small at top inside of this one, remove it also. be careful, this is high voltage. unit must be running in haet, locate the defrost board, you will see a pin marked FRC,there is a yellow wire wich should be on NORM.pull this wire and put on FRC pin. should go into defrost, if it does sensor is bad, if not board is bad.if you have to replace board, i would replace sensor also. board is most expensive of the two.

Hello buck3371, By the time you could reply to my inquiry (7 hrs later) the local HVAC fellow had arrived. As you suspected he Dx a bad Board on the trane XE 1100. He will order the new board and install. the total fee for Service call , Dx problem , and installation will be 400 dollars. does this sound fair to you? thanks Andy
